Time Out

Im sorry to say that I will be taking a break from the blog for a while. Its become difficult for me to update every day with other things going on at the moment.

Added to that, the experiment has being going badly and I need a bit of time to think what I am going to do. I may need to rethink stakes, or cut some services, or maybe take a break altogether for while. This weekend was a collosal disaster, with Football Elite losing over a grand just on their own. JC has also had a shocker lately, which has meant some tough losses.

It may be better to concentrate on a smaller number of services, Im not sure yet but I may relauch this blog at some time in the future.

Cool Kaymer Closes it Out

A pretty good day today, with Football Elite picking a nice winner in the form of Palermo beating Fiorentina and Keith Elliott following up last week's win on Charl Schwartzel with 14/1 Kaymer in Abu Dhabi.

A bit of a mad day from EI, who tipped three different horses in one day, which I dont think Ive seen them do before. Perhaps they got a bit carried away recent successes.

That is eight profitable days in a row now, and if I had managed to put my bets on yesterday, it would be nine. This is more like what I expected when I started this experiment.

I am in a bit of a quandry about Pricewise Extra at the moment. I have been following them for a few months now and frankly, apart from Tom Segal, they have been poor. When you factor in the fact that Segal's tips get smashed in to half their original price, its barely worth bothering with the service if the others dont make a profit. I am minded to stick with them a little longer to see if they can turn things around, but I am not convinced by the long term viability of the service with so many thousands of people potentially following the advices.

A very good winner today for Tipping Legends with Ballabrigs at Catterick, which was given out at 9/2 but drifted like a barge and went off at 13/2, which meant a very healthy return of nearly 800 quid. All the other services were disappointing, but I am hoping this week signals the tipsters starting to turn the corner after all the bad weather and get things back on track.

Back to his Best

Its just like London buses: you wait for ages and then three come along at once. That's certainly been the story this week with EI, who followed up yesterday's superb win on Mr Green with two more winners today, meaning they've made me nearly 1500 quid in two days after a bit of a dry spell. Not bad going really. Just to note, I upped stakes to £100/point for them on the basis of yesterday's success.

A better day also for HBI, repairing some of the damage of what had hitherto been a pretty terrible month for them.

Unfortunately I missed Simple Bet's first bet of the day, which was a winner at 5/2 for them.

All About the Green

Despite a fantastic winner for EI with Mister Green, I ended the day with only a slight profit, mainly due to two more losers for Football Elite. Things have a gone a little awry for Matt recently to say the least after a superb start to the season. As a gambler I always prefer slow and steady profit to big ups and downs, which can play on the emotions a bit.

I was thinking to myself today that if I was forced to follow just one tipster for the future, I would probably choose Equine Investments, as it is an excellent service, delivering good profit year after year. The biggest problem is availability of prices, but they do have plans to tackle that next season and with the possibility of backing their mentions as well, overall I cant think of a service that compares to it. Over the Summer I came close to trebling my bank even taking reduced prices in many cases, which is fairly outstanding. If things continue in solid fashion for another year or so, I may be backing around £200-£250 a point on their selections, which if they make around 150 point profit a season, is pretty mouthwatering stuff.

Anyway, those days are still a way off so got to keep plugging away for the time being.

Picking Paktolos

Paktolos looked like a sure thing when Simple Bet tipped it up as a 6pt win bet, particularly when that was followed by JC tipping it as well. The horse duly obliged by romping home by three and a half lenghts.

Other than that a blank day, with EI coming up short with another second, which is becoming a common theme at the moment.

Just to note, I have reduced HBI stakes to £20/point after a poor month. I suppose it was due after 10 winning months in a row. And I should also point out that they have had a couple of close seconds on big priced outsiders. Had either or both of those come in, January would have a very different look to it.

Very, very disappointed to wake up this morning to see that Stricker hadnt managed to win the Sony Open. When I went to bed he was making a charge and it looked like he would close the deal. Sunday Bloody Sunday

Things really just not going for me at the moment. Following on from a very near miss on a 20/1 shot last week, HBI had another big priced selection beaten by a whisker, as 14/1 shot Ivory Silk just missed out at Wolves.

Football Elite suffered appaling luck this week with three of their teams having players sent off, one penalty being missed and one late goal against.

Not much you can do in such circumstances. At least there was a nice winner for Simple Bet and for Keith Elliott to balance the books for the day.

Quiet day today, with TL and EI sitting it out and just one bet for HBI, which was tipped at 7/2 but drifted out to over 7/1 by the off unusually.

A nice winner for Simple Bet in the form of Russian Music, given out last night before the stable had smashed the price down, which I thought was a nice touch by the service to give members a heads up. Didnt win as much as I was expecting though as there was a rule 4 deduction.

Better Day

A better day today with three winners, and it was very nearly a great day with Bel Cantor only narrowly losing at 20/1 for HBI.

Was also a good day for my golf trading as Charl Schwartzel came through to win in South Africa, having backed him at 5/1 downwards. About time he won but nice to bolster the profits with a golf winner.

The other golf bets were disappointing, but at least my decision to cut Keith Elliott has been a good one. I am considering removing him altogehter as I think he tips far too many favourites and I dont see how you can make profit that way in golf. Bettingzone and Birdie Golf have got where they are tipping big priced winners and that is where you need to be in golf. You will have plenty of 80/1+ winners in a season, and if you can pick one or two that is how you make profits.

Tough Times

Another tough day for the tipsters with no winners yesterday. It could have been even worse, but I missed EI's first bet and a loser from Simplebet.

Racing is difficult at the moment and I believe it would be best for the tipsters to keep stakes small whilst we have this bad weather.

In the golf its looking like place money only as Glover has opened up a big lead in Hawaii and my players are a long way back in SA, although I wouldnt rule out a charge from Richard Sterne over the weekend.

Yo-yo-ing

Things really yo-yo-ing at the moment. Can't seem to get ahead this month, as soon as I get into profit I give it all back.

A small winner for EI but everything else lost. In many ways I should actually be pleased because I missed the first few bets of the day - two for TL and one from HBI - all of which lost and which would have cost me over 250 quid.

I think with this freezing weather results are going to be a little skewiff and if I was a tipster I would be limiting staking at the moment. As Laurence at EI said, the track at Southwell is riding very deep and no surprise to see some big priced winners.

Snow Fun

I dont know if I've ever seen so much snow - its quite amazing. We must have about two feet here.

That did mean no racing today however, and probably none tomorrow either. Just the one bet today, a nice winner for Football Elite with Bari taking down Udinese 2-0. Matt was very confident about this one, as Udinese had their main striker missing and struggle to score away from home anyway. Its been quite a season for Matt and I very much hope it continues now that I'm using progressive staking!

All Quiet on the Western Front

Very quiet day today - just two bets. And both in the same race believe it or not. It was the might of Pricewise Extra up against the lean machine that is Horse Betting Index in the 1.55 at Wolverhampton. Tensions were running high, brows were being mopped as the showdown between two of horse racing's most promising up and coming tipsters loomed. "Who would win?" everyone asked. Pride of the tipping world was as stake. Who had called it right? I for one was on the edge of my seat.

Well actually I was out hunting for envelopes for the office but I was intrigued to see who would win. The honours in the end went to Pricewise Extra, with their tip Bawaardi edging out HBI's Quick Release by half a length in a gripping encounter.

I would have preferred things the other way round as I had substantially more on Quick Release but not to worry.

With more bad weather forecast Im not expecting too much action this week on the betting front so that may be as exciting as it gets.

Solid Start

January has got off to a solid start - 3 winning days out of 3 so far. All small wins though, and nothing compared to some of the losing days in December. But you have to be grateful for small mercies in this game.

Today's profit down largely to Mallorca winning for Football Elite. Yet another home win for the islanders, who are superb on their own patch.

I think I am going to reduce Tom Segal down to £30/point in line with the other Pricewise tipsters. It keeps everything standard and is easier for accounting purposes. I think I may have started staking too high for the service anyway.

I will also be betting 12.5% of my bank on Football Elite from now on, which should allow for a gradual building of the bank rather than a sudden hike in stakes when the bank doubles.

Reversing fortunes

Another nice winner for JC in the shape of a reverse forecast at Southwell. Other than that, a quiet day again. The weather is playing havoc with the racing fixtures so not many bets to start the year.

I mentioned a while ago that I was planning on adding a service to the portfolio to take it up to up a nice round 10. After a good deal of consideration, I have decided to add Simple Bet to the portfolio. They are a little-heard of service but have delivered good profits over two years, at an ROI of around 25%. They seem to rely primarily on information, but it does seem to be fairly trustworthy information based on their results. I am happy that they are kocher and feel comfortable to start them off at £20/point on a 50-point bank and to see how we get on.

At the same time, I will be reducing the golf services staking, which is something I also mentioned I wanted to do a while ago. Although they are good services, I feel that there is not the same potential to build banks as in football and horse-racing. Realistically you need a 100-200 point bank, and even in a good year you would probably only just about double the bank. You only have two tournaments per week to bet on normally, compared to hundreds of horse racing and football fixtures.

I will therefore be reducing Keith Elliott to £10/point and Dave Tindall to £15/point. Keith often puts up 3 or 2-point each way bets, so I think reducing it to £10 actually brings it in line with the others. I will reduce Dave Tindall slightly from £20/point as he has had a quiet time of it lately and considering he usually tips 10 points per week, £20/point equals £200 per tournament. Staking for Birdie Golf is much lower, with often only one player per tournament, so I am happy to keep staking at £20/point for Roger.

I have my eye on another couple of services, which I may add to the portfolio in time. One is a tennis service and the other is a new promising horse racing tipster.

I have spent considerable time weighing up the changes to the portfolio but feel they are worthwhile making and will result in better results long-term.

A New Decade

Well here we are in a new decade. A quiet start to it, with just a few bets for TL and HBI, but at least the day was profitable. Wouldnt have been nice to start the year with a big loss. A nice 5pt winner for HBI in the 12.30 at Cheltenham.

December Totals

Well here is the carnage in black and white, broken down by service. What a terrible month, over a grand and a half loss. This is pretty much the worst I expected could happen in a month. The only service who held their own was Tipping Legends, turning out a decent profit for the month. Every other service made a loss in December. Although Pricewise Extra made me a profit, I did miss a number of their losing bets so the service did make a loss for December.

I can only put this down to strange results, as a number of other tipsters have also had bad months. Perhaps the weather going from very wet to very cold has affected some horses and stables. Who knows really.

Football Elite were probably due a bad month after three incredible months, so I can't really complain. Matt has demonstrated a 17% edge over the bookies over 4 years, which is enough evidence for me that his approach does work. I am not overly worried about his disappointing run in December.

I am however concerned with Steve Lewis Hamilton, who has made a substantial loss since I joined his service about 5 months ago. I wonder if Steve mainly relies on information, and when the stables he gets his info from are going well, this means big profits, but when they are off form, he has nowhere really to turn. I will be monitoring his form closely over the next couple of months.

I still have confidence in EI and HBI. The former is probably the best tipster out there, having demonstrated an edge of more than 20% over the bookies over seven years or more, which is unrivalled in tipping circles as far as I am aware. Even the great Patrick Veitch only manages 15% ROI. HBI has had nine winning months out of nine and does seem to consistently generate profit, so just a question of trying not to miss the early value on his tips as I did this month.

The jury is out on Pricewise Extra for me. Although they had a great first six months or so, I am not convinced by all of their tipsters and I think they need to show consistency over a couple of years or more for me to sure of their ability.

I suppose the only positive things I can say about things are: a) at least I made profit in November so Im not completely stuffed yet and b) turning in to the New Year, results and form may settle down now that we have had a good portion of the season.
