November totals

So the first month of the experiment comes to an end. Not a full month, but I will go for calendar months for the purposes of recording results rather than going from mid-month to mid-month.

A winning month, which is the main thing. Not a huge profit, just under nine hundred quid, but a couple of services have shown promise and hopefully the others will pick up as the national hunt and all-weather seasons get into full swing.

A word about profit targets: my aim is to make a minimum of £20,000 over the first 12 months of this experiment. I hear the average London salary is 25 grand, so given that there is no tax on gambling winnings (unless you include Betfair's premium charges!), that would be the equivalent of a London salary. I have already largely covered the costs of the subscriptions, but I guess if we're being honest those should be included in the totals as well.

There are currently nine services in the experiment, so that would be just over two grand profit each on average, which I dont think is overly ambitious. I am looking to add one more service to make it a nice round 10, which would then also mean an average of exactly two grand profit from each service.

There is also my own betting, which centres largely around golf but includes some football trading and occasional tennis bets. I would expect to make at least 10 grand from my own bets, which if the tipsters hit the target set for them, would make up a tidy total.

Anyway, I have no control really over how much the services will make, so having targets is a bit of an abstraction but I feel it is always helpful to have an idea of what you would like to happen when you start something like this.

Looking further into the future, if these services continue to be successful as they have been in the past, there is considerable scope for building banks and increasing stakes. The issue then becomes getting your bets on, which is already a little bit of a concern. However, rather like the football manager who has a full squad to choose from, that will be a nice problem should it arise.

Below are the totals overall and for each service for November:

TOTAL FOR NOVEMBER 2009: £895.50

Tipping Legends: £795.50
Horse Betting Index: -£40
Steve Lewis Hamilton: -£288
Pricewise Extra: -£337
Football Elite: £495
Keith Elliott: £470
Birdie Golf: -£40
Dave Tindall: -160

At month's end

Well November ends on a downer but still in profit overall. Just two bets today, both of which lost.

Its the return of Equine Investments tomorrow, which is good news. However, trying to get a bet on at anything like advised prices will be a challenge to say the least. It will be an interesting test period as to whether it is worth paying the high subscription cost for the service. So far it has been worth it, but this has been an outstanding season for Laurence and I fear a less succesful period would bring that in to question. Anyway, we will see how things go.

Lighting Things Up

Not many bets today but a nice winner for HBI with Key Light at 15/2. I'm glad they had a winner as I recently upped the stakes for that service and every bet since then until today's had lost.

Tom Segal was "thrown a curveball" he says by Fairyhouse being abandoned and he didnt sound particularly confident about the tip he gave out instead at Leicester. Sounds like the Pricewise team are forced by the Racing Post to give out a tip whatever happens, which probably isnt a great policy in fairness.

I missed Steve Lewis Hamilton's pick but it didnt win thank god. There is literally nothing more frustrating for the punter than missing a bet that goes on to win. Leaves you with a few less hairs on your head.

Forza Italia!

Absolutely cock-a-hoot this morning after waking up to the Molinari brothers' win at the World Cup in China. Not only were they a Keith Elliott tip but I backed them heavily myself as well as I felt they were a cracking bet. Eduardo has hit an incredible hot streak and Francesco has been solid all season, just hasn't putted well enough. But in this format his brother would be putting for him some of the time. Perhaps most importantly though, being brothers you would expect them to gel well and spur each other on, a vital part of team golf as anyone who has played it will testify.

A fantastic win of over sixeen hundred clear profit for the tournament. Was unlucky not to have also had a win on Ishikawa, Roger Green's tip for the Casio World Open who finished second. But not far off seven grand profit for the last three weeks on golf, one of my best runs ever. As I have said before, this is good news because it swells the banks for this experiment and gives larger reserves if needed.

Hopefully larger reserves wont be needed though, especially if some more of the tipsters were to hit the kind of form Jeremiah Catskill is in at the moment. An incredible 20/1 winner yesterday on top of all his other recent successes. He has increased the bank considerably and I will be increasing stakes to £30/point accordingly. Tis good to see JC back to his best after a disappointing summer. A pretty good day also for Matt's Football Elite service, which is having a great season so far and also a win for Tom Segal of Pricewise Extra, who seems to be the leader of that service (hence his tips getting smashed in to half their original price).

Will include golf results in sunday's results. Here are Saturday's:

Losing day...again

Yes another losing day. its only Tipping Legends doing well at the moment really, all the other services are suffering badly. Steve Lewis Hamilton has been particuarly disappointing since I joined his service.

In the World Cup Golf, Italy are up there with a chance and would be a big winner for me. Ireland are looking strong but are a very short price with two rounds to go. Should make interesting viewing.

A nice winner again for Tipping Legends on Exmoor Ranger at Newbury. Otherwise no luck, and another 2nd for Pricewise Extra. Lost count of how many seconds they've had recently. If a few of those had been firsts...oh well, I suppose you cant start talking in ifs and buts in this game.

Unfortunately another losing day overall. I could do with some winners now, its been a tricky month. Hopefully a good weekend will turn things around.

Football Frenzy

I quiet day for the horse racing tipsters...but its been a monster couple of days for my football trades. Have had nine out of ten successful since I started trading the over/unders and cant believe it really. I think its probably just a lucky run and must tell myself not to get too excited. Was on edge for the second half of a number of tonight's champions league matches. Needed milan and marseille and apol and athletico to stay below 2.5...and thank god they did. It was one of the most nervous halves of football I can remember.

Equine Investments is back on Tuesday...bring it on.

A charming day

A better day today, thanks to a nice couple of winners for Tipping Legends, including Great Charm at 6/1 in the last at Southwell. Jeremiah has been going great guns on the all-weather this season, and merits consideration of a slight increase in stakes after a strong run for the service since I have returned to them.

Pricewise Extra also had a winner, although I backed at SP and therefore missed out on a fair chunk of profit. Disappointing day for HBI, right after I upped the stakes! Ah well, sods law I think they call it.

Also a winning day again for AW Winners, Matt Smith's horse racing service. Although I have not included it in this experiment so far, I am trialling it at the moment and if recent form continues, may add it to the experiment. Has seen a 50% increase in the bank since I returned to the service, and has potential to be as good or even better than Matt's Football Elite service.

A word on the LPGA Tour Championship last night - I was right about Ochoa, she again failed to convert a great position, and almost unthinkably for a player who was won 28 tournaments in 4 years, she seems to find winning hard these days. I was wrong about Shin though, she disappointed. Still, only made a slight loss on the tournament so not to worry too much. In hindsight, a lay of Ochoa should have been the bet given how low she traded at times.

Another disappointing day

The point of the portfolio approach, as I understand it, is that the ups and downs are meant to cancel each other out leaving you with a nice, steady, even profit. Well that hasnt happened so far and today was another example of everything failing at once.

Two losers apiece from Pricewise Extra and Steve Lewis Hamilton and one from Tipping Legends means its been another expensive day. As ever, I have to tell myself to be patient and wait for things to come good. Its tough though when you have so many losers at once. To be honest, if it wasnt for my own betting, I would probably have to be cutting stakes already. A sobering thought so early in to the experiment.

Im on Jiyai Shin for the LPGA today, feel she is much more clinical at the moment than some of the others at the top of the leaderboard and has added incentive to capture all the honours today. Ochoa looks a shadow of her former self and I would be suprised if she wins tonight.

A word on Horse Betting Index: I am considering upping the stakes slightly to £25/point after recent successes. Its now looking like nine winning months out of nine and over 400 points profit for the season for them. Although the ROI isnt as high as Equine Investments or SLH this year, its still mightily impressive. That kind of consistency is exactly what you're looking for as an investor, and would have allowed a considerable building of the bank over the year. Ive only been with them a short while but I can see potential and I want to put my money where my mouth is by looking to grow the bank as profits build.

Morning glory

What a morning! Tried to keep waking up to check Molinari's position during the night but gave up after about 3am. Awoke around 9 to see he had won in a playoff against Karlsson. A great result, followed by Westwood's emphatic triumph in Dubai means a cracking weekend's golf for me and a superb end to the season. Won over two and a half grand this weekend following thirteen hundred last week on Ames, meaning Ive won nearly four grand on golf over the last two weeks. That's just what I need to maintain my banks for this experiment and in general to keep myself going.

As for the experiment itself, more disappointment from the horse racing and golf tipsters today. Its difficult not to get a little frustrated during these losing runs. You pay a lot for the services and expect them to deliver results. I guess you have to stick with it and stay disciplined and hope they deliver long-term results.

Westwood Ho!

Things were looking like they were going to be set for a thrilling finish to the Race to Dubai tomorrow, with the top two contenders, McIlroy and Westwood, shooting it out for the title and the order of merit. Then McIlroy went and bogied the last three holes, all but handing it to Westwood. Things not quite over yet, but Rory will need some fireworks tomorrow and he has to hope Lee messes up. I guess its all part of the learning curve for the young lad, he just showed a lack of maturity I felt.

I am on both heavily so a Westwood win would be a good result. McGowan looks like the only realistic threat, although I suppose you cant right off the guys further back.

I am also on Eduardo Molinari in the Dunlop Phoenix at 40/1 and he leads by one going in to the final round. Karlsson one behind is a worry. Forza Molinari!

A mixed day on the experiment front. Losers from TL, SLH and Pricewise Extra, but a late winner from HBI and a profitable day for Football Elite, largely thanks to a late winner for Depor.

Arghhh!

That is the only word I can think of to describe how am I feeling after having missed another winner from HBI today. It cost me 300 quid, which means in a week I have missed out on pretty much a grand that I would have won had I backed all their tips. Today's wasnt really my fault as the race had already been run before I could get out during my lunchbreak. I will have to consider reworking my day so I dont miss any more tips.

Other than that, a slightly disappointing day anyway.

The price of fame

About 8/1, that's if you're talking about Elusive Fame, tipped up the Tipping Legends and squeezing home by a neck in the 2.50 at Southwell. Added to a winner at 4/1 in the 3.20 at Southwell, that completes a fine run of recent form on the all-weather for TL. With Steve Lewis Hamilton also tipping a winner, turned out to be a fine day.

Could have been an absolute cracker though, had Pricewise Extra's tip come home rather than finishing second.

I forgot to include the Birdie Golf Service's tips in my weekend's results so will include here instead. As this is a cumulative experiment it wont make any difference to the totals putting them in now rather than yesterday. Just to note, they tipped up Adam Scott for the Oz Masters but I didnt manage to get the bet on in time so it wont form part of my results.

He Ames he scores!

Was over the moon last night with Ames' win at Disney. Backed him at 40/1 going into the final round and then at 11s in-running. I have a poor record in playoffs so perhaps I was owed one. The other two really handed it to him though, Ames definitely had luck on his side.

Even taking into account a load of other bets, I managed to emerge with a 13 hundred quid profit from the tournament. Shame the US tour is over really, 2009 was a superb year for me. Hopefully 2010 will bring similar results.

Quiet day on the racing front, apparently one of Tipping Legends' tips ran a very close second.

Lucky at Last!

Loathe as I am to use the name of a horse as the title of a blog entry, I feel it sums things up very nicely. Three winners today, and hopefully back on track.

Tipping Legends landed a 14/1 winner at Cheltenham, although only staking 0.75pts e/w. Tom Segal landed a nice winner for Pricewise Extra, although the price had halved by the time I got on. And HBI rounded off the day with a solid 7-2 winner.

Just a note to say, rather appropriately for how things have been going, I missed a 9-1 winner for HBI yesterday, as it was sent out early in the week for the Paddy Power Gold Cup and I forgot to put it on! Damnation is all I can say and that I will make sure it doesnt happen again.

Im now going to settle in for the final round of the US golf. Have a few runners but Ames would be the best result for me. A nice early finish tonight so should get to bed at a more reasonable hour than normal on a Sunday.

Finally a winner! Or was it?!!

There I was breathing a sigh of relief as finally I land a winner with Tipping Legends' last tip of the day, Wicked Daze in the 8.50 at Wolves. Then, almost unbelievably, I find out its been disqualified. Went to bed last night thoroughly disgruntled with this experiment only three days in, having not had a winner and having backed about 25 losers.

But alas, I awake this morning to find out that the bookie I placed it with has paid out! Hurrah, finally a winner! This is one instance where it pays to bet with the bookie rather than Betfair.

I also awake to find Tiger has earned his ridiculous appearance money by dotting up by a couple down under. Not a big win as I backed him at odds-on but any profit is gratefully received at the moment. In Hong Kong, McIlroy just misses out on landing a big pay day for Keith Elliott (and me, having backed his tips).

I now have serious doubts about this kid McIlroy's ability to win and his putting concerns me greatly. I simply cannot believe he is still value to win, but I suppose may be ok to back for a place.

Am I a jinx?

Here is the evidence:

I join Tipping Legends after they've amassed 400 points profit in 2008 and before that have been the top tipsters on a tipping site for the previous two years. I join, and they proceed to lose about 40 points over a few months. I leave, thinking there are cheaper services that will bring better returns. They then produce 140 points profit over the next two months.

I return to the service, and they have a complete shocker, a whole day without anything.

I know its too early to judge but it seems uncanny how often I join a long-term winning service only for it to hit a terrible losing streak.

Close to a big winner for Pricewise Extra, but alas no cigar. All in all a shocking day.

On the positive side, Tiger has moved three clear down under and Liang is in prime position in Hong Kong. Justin Rose, one of Keith Elliott's tips, is also well-placed in the US. I have backed him again with a view to laying heavily when his price drops lower.

I also think I may have devised a trading strategy for football that will return around 8% roi in the long-term. Its based around the fact that around 40-50% of games are drawing at half-time and the majority of the remainder are 1-0 to either side (i.e. there are few goals in the first half). You still need to pick the right matches but the market will help with that. I am optimistic but will test over the next few weeks and report back.

Figures for 12.11.09

Well here are the figures for 12.11.09, the first day of this experiment.

Just a note to say I will be betting £20/point on Tipping Legends. They recommend a 200 point bank but I think tipsters often give very conservative advice for bank levels because they dont want punters coming back to them moaning if they have a losing streak and blow the advised bank. I think 100 should be reasonable.

I will be betting £50 a point for Pricewise Extra, £75/point Equine Investments after a great Summer, and £20/point HBI.

Results for 12.11.09:

Tipping Legends

3.50 Southwell - Loose Caboose - 1pt e/w 7-1 (LOST) -£40

Pricewise Extra

4.20 Wolverhampton - Jewelled - 1pt win 11.33 (LOST) £-50

TOTAL FOR DAY: -£90

Quiet Start

Well a quiet start to proceedings today. Nothing from SLH and Horse Betting Index and Equine Investments are on holiday until December.

Tipping Legends had a loser today, as did Pricewise Extra.

I should have mentioned that I also follow Dave Tindall of Bettingzone fame and will include his results in this experiment. Been a bit quiet of late but Dave is one of the best out there.

Golf bets this week have made a promising start in Hong Kong - McIlroy, Molinari and Liang all up there early doors. Not sure what happened to Scott Strange though.

Tiger looks a nailed-on certainty to win down under after hitting the lead already and Ive had an interest. His record from infront speaks for itself and against this field he could win left-handed.

Had a few tennis trades today - generally badly. I did come across an interesting statistic though: apparently 40% of break points are won by the receiver. Seems incredible to me, I would have guessed more like 20%. But it gives options for trading I think.

A Betting Experiment

I am starting an experiment today. I will be following a number of well-known tipsters, using a "portfolio" approach to betting, to see if you can make a living, or at least supplement your income with a healthy second stream, by following the advices of well-known tipsters.

I will be using five front-line horse racing services, a couple of golf ones and one football service. I will be open to adding other services as time goes on but for the moment will be trying to stick to these services and see how we do. The idea will be to use advised betting banks and to increase staking as (hopefully) the banks increase.

The five front-line horse-racing services are: Equine Investments, Steve Lewis Hamilton (Private), Tipping Legends, Pricewise Extra and Horse Betting Index. The golf services will be Keith Elliott and Tipping Legends' Birdie Golf Service and the football service will be Football Elite.

I will also have my own bets and will keep records of those but will not include them in this experiment, as it is really about how well tipsters do in the long run.

I hope this proves fruitful, my only worries are of a losing run at the start which would stretch my funds, but fingers crossed they dont all start badly, and I can get some cash in reserve.

Right, just 35 mins to Pricewise Extra's tips, lets get going!
