A Tipping Legend

A brilliant winner from JC yesterday in the shape of Chaninbar in the 2.15 at Taunton. Tipped up at 10/1 as a 3-point win bet, I got on at 8s but then it drifted to an SP of 9/1. A bold call but it came home by 2 and a half lengths and that bet alone puts a slightly different complexion on the month.

Sadly EI couldnt follow up with up a winner, Bertoliver getting pipped close home at Kempton proceeded by Zegna who ran no sort of race at all.

Yesterday's winner caps off a great four-month stretch for JC and perhaps marks a return to the days of old. Let's hope so anyway. If he could emulate the form of 2008, when the service managed over 400 points profit and an ROI of something like 40%, it certainly would be something to savour.

So just one day left in 2009. It's not been a great year for me, both personally and betting-wise, and I'm happy to see the back of it to be honest. I feel like it was a steep learning curve for my betting, as it was the first time I started following tipsters other than just Bettingzone's golf service and I wasted a lot of money on rip-off merchants and losing services. I feel much better placed now to judge tipsters and feel I have a reasonably good portfolio, perhaps just in need of one or two tweaks.

I think one of the easiest mistakes to make when you step into the world of tipsters and portfolio betting in particular is to chop and change quickly, dropping good tipsters as soon as they have a bad run and looking for the next promise of instant riches. Sadly it is not about instant riches, but about slow and steady profit, and building your banks over time. Tipsters who can demonstrate an edge over the bookmakers year after year are a rare thing, and when you find them you should stick with them. The other thing you need to have is a large enough betting bank to cover losing runs, which inevitably will happen. I would say not having a big enough bank is the most common mistake amateurs make when starting out in this game.

The other mistake I made this year was to get involved too much in things I didnt know much about, and betting without much of a plan. I will be cutting this out in 2010 and only betting to rigidly defined strategies and staking. I have come to the conclusion that this is the only way to make profit in the long run. It seems to be the one thing all professional gamblers have in common. That may mean an end to in-running golf betting for me, which would be a shame as I quite enjoy it but I think if I take a cold hard look at things then virtually all my profit comes from pre-tournament bets rather than in-running, so unless I totally overhaul my strategy, it will have to go.

On the positive side of things, I have made some progress in designing my own football strategies and will be trialling these in the New Year.

So, on a final note, Happy New Year to all and lets hope 2010 is a better year.

Dark December Drags On

Yes these dark old days of December are quite depressing arent they. And not much to cheer oneself up on the betting front either. Just about broke even on the day, but after a bad day yesterday it looks almost certain I will finish down for December, barring some kind of miracle finish over the last couple of days.

Two winners on the day, a nice 5 point winner for HBI and Harlech Castle in the last from TL, which was also a mention from Equine Investments. I am going to watch the mentions closely now from EI, as they seem to be doing pretty well overall and could be set up as a second system for next season. I would imagine prices would be more easily available than on his main account bets and if he could manage around 20% ROI on those tips, it would be a healthy addition to an already excellent service.

Just to note, I missed Pricewise Extra's tip, but true to current form, it lost, so no harm done there.

Cold Turkey

Its that time of year when people are munching on turkey sandwiches, the weather outside is freezing and you settle in to watch a few hours football on the box.

Betting wise, not a great day with a couple of places from TL and losers from Equine Investments and Pricewise Extra.

I have decided to downgrade Pricewise Extra to £30/point, apart from Tom Segal, who I will keep at £50/point. Apart from Tom they have been poor over the last few months and I have had to decrease staking accordingly.

Post-Christmas Cheer

Well I hope everyone had a nice xmas. I was up north so not able to put any bets on, although judging by results that may have been a good thing. Today I was only able to get on Tipping Legends' tips as didnt have much time, but that was also a good thing as Equine Investments and Pricewise Extra both put up losers today.

A nice winner for JC today at 5/2 means a profitable day and Im continuing to claw back the losses incurred earlier in the month.

Funshine in the snow!

A great winner from Tipping Legends at Southwell today with Mr Funshine, given at 20/1 but it was down to 16s by the time I got on. A last-gasp penalty for Lens meant a win for Football Elite as well, which was a real bonus.

It could have been even better if Equine Investments' tip, Jackie Kiely, had managed to get its nose in front in the 2.25.

Feeling a bit worse for wear today after a heavy night out last night. Ended up at the casino, where I managed to slowly and steadily build up a nice tidy 100 quid in over an hour at the roulette table, only to then lose it all, and another 150, in about ten minutes. Its incredible how often that happens. My mate and I were discussing why it is that you seem to either make a slight profit, which takes ages, or lose the whole bloody lot very quickly at the casino. A strange game.

Still, happy with today's efforts and those of the last few days, which have seen some of the dire losses from early December being slowly eeked back. Looks like that's it for racing for a few days now. See you later and merry christmas!

Hitting the bar

Today could have been a great day if things had just gone a little differently. Roger Green's tip in the SA Open, Shiv Kapur, lost in a playoff to Richie Ramsay. Tipped at 66/1, it would have been a great winner. And if Tenerife hadn't missed a penalty, could have been an excellent day for Football Elite.

Still, a profit on the day thanks to a 12/1 winner for HBI.

Back to losing ways

Well the winning streak was short and sweet, just a couple of days. Today was a little unfortunate as I missed quite a bit of value on the one winner of the day, Fromsong, which was given out at 10/1 by HBI but drifted in to an SP of 6/1.

Shame Frankfurt didnt manage to get the better of Wolfsburg, that would have been a nice winner for us, but it finished 2-2 in the end.

A losing day, but nothing catostrophic. JC was a bit miffed to see Haydock get called off at the last minute having done 3 hours of research!

Make that two

Yes, that's two profitable days in a row. Just the one bet for today, a winner from Equine Investments.

Very nearly missed it though. I saw the e-mail with the bet just before going off to xmas lunch. Rolled out of the pub a few hours later, feeling slightly laden with the excesses of the yuletide season, just in time to realise I had 10 minutes to get the bet on. Unfortunately its price was only just above 2/1 at that point from the 3/1 advised, but I had the trusty iphone with me and managed to get the money on. Happy to see it came home for us.

No bets from any other services, apart from maybe Pricewise Extra. Not sure what happened to it again though Im afraid.

Although the last two days' profits have been small, fingers crossed this is a sign of turning the corner.

Stone the crows

Shock horror. A winning day at last. Only a hundred and sixty quid profit, but I said yesterday I would take any sort of winning day, so Im not going to complain.

Well done to Tipping Legends, who have held firm during this period of woe. A rare four point win bet for them today, which rattled home nicely and another winner at 4/1.

I have my office xmas lunch tomorrow and a pub crawl on saturday, so not sure how many bets I will be able to put on over the next couple of days. With the weather forecast though, Im not sure how many bets there will be to put on anyway.

On the eleventh day of Christmas

my true love gave to me...

...yet more losses. That's 11 days in a row now and not a pretty picture. I would be grateful for any sort of winning day at the moment - just a day when I dont lose a shed load even!

Very few bets with the weather, and likely to be very few bets over the next few days with the forecast. That is probably a good thing - a break would probably benefit the tipsters at the mo. I had a brief e-mail chat with one of the tipsters today (not from this experiment) and he said the results are definitely skewif at the moment - horses with no form winning for no obvious reason, ones that probably wont win again for a long time. He said form is becoming very difficult to read and all are finding it tough.

A winner for JC today but two big losers for E.I., one of which was evens, perhaps the shortest price they've tipped at since I joined. I missed Pricewise's tip, not sure if it won or lost. It actually could have been a good day, but JC's other tip was beaten half a length. It was a 9/1 shot, so would have been a tasty winner, but as they say, when it rains, it pours.

Taking it on the chin

Guess what? Yet more losses today, that makes 10 losing days in a row. All losers today, a sorry tale of woe. The only consolation, scant though it is, is that I missed Tipping Legends' and HBI's first bets of the day, which were both losers.

I am starting to wonder if those who have been involved in the game longer than me can remember such a poor run across the board from big-name tipsters. I am slightly in shock and am going to be cutting my stakes now for Tipping Legends along with the all the cuts made yesterday. I feel a little bit like a company in the throws of recession that has to lay off staff and reduce wages to enable it to stay afloat. Only with this its reducing stakes rather than wages, and cutting services rather than staff.

My plan is to reduce the stakes and ride out this storm as best I can, minimizing losses until things are back on track. Something strange is going on, whether its the freaky weather, tipsters having their minds on xmas and not the horses, or some other factor at work, I dont know. But whilst it is going on I dont want to be wiped out completely. Maybe a break over xmas and some time for reflection will lead to an improvement in form for the tipsters in the New Year. In the meantime I will be concentrating on my own betting for a while, particularly football trading which I have been getting into lately.

The woes continue

A quiet day today as usual on a Monday, with only two race meetings. Steve Lewis Hamilton tipped up yet more losers and his abysmal run goes on. Also losers for Pricewise Extra and Tipping Legends, but nothing for any of the others. Only consolation was a winner for another system I am trialling, cancelling out some of the day's losses.

Its been nine losing days in a row, and I am forced to reduce staking considerably after this dire run. I will be cutting down SLH's stakes to £40/point and reducing HBI to £20/point. Equine Investments have done well so will remain at £75/point, and Tipping Legends, despite a slight dip, are still up so will remain at £30/point. I am considering cutting some of the golf tipsters, just feels like I have too many at the moment. Undecided as yet what to do.

Its a bit of a sad day for me really, having to cut stakes at such an early stage. Its been an absolute horror run for the tipsters, not just those on this experiment but many others as well. Hopefully I will look back one day at this as such a temporary blip, a moment when I held my nerve and saw things through to reach better days on the other side. But then again, a month or two more of this and my banks will be empty and the experiment will have failed.

I said at the start that the one thing you need in an experiment like this is a good start, to build the banks to allow for a losing run. Although November was a good month, the dreaded horror run has ensued and has started to put things in jeopardy. I know it must be galling for someone like JP who has lost over 20k in the matter of a few weeks, but at least he was over 60k up before that happened, so can afford a few losses. Its tough when a disaster hits so early.

Pablo Pay Day

Pablo Martin's win in South Africa was very welcome today, given that the tipsters poured in more losses. I backed him heavily in running, feeling that his price was artifically high due to the two market leaders being big names, but both of whom have trouble closing tournaments. Martin is a talented player and seems to have the focused mentality of other Spaniards like Seve and Olly. Once again it proves that to make money on golf in-running, you have to oppose big name players who are shakey under pressure. I have my list of "bottlers", and poor old Ernie is high on that list after some shocking last day (and last hole) collapses in recent years. The mugs will pile in to the big names but you can make a tidy sum by getting to know who is cool under pressure and who is not. How big a name they are is irrelevant.

A particularly poor weekend for Football Elite, with all four bets losing. I suppose it was to be expected after such a great season so far, but has come at just the wrong time for me. A winner for Equine Investments today, but only at 9/4 and they also had a loser. I didnt bother backing Tom Segal's tip, as after 5 minutes its price had halved. A victim of his own success I guess you could say, the curse of the best tipsters. It was a non-runner anyway.

I will wait for the tipsters to start turning things around. I believe they will in the end, but hopefully sooner rather than later. Its just a question of sitting tight for the moment.

A bit of a Headache

What did I say about things only getting better...

Another disappointing day. Equine Investments were a bit unlucky as their first tip, Headache, got clipped on the line for a dead-heat. Tipping Legends started the day well but tailed off. HBI had a complete and utter shocker again, with two 5 point win bets getting turned over. Two losers for Pricewise Extra and one for Football Elite and it all adds up to an appaling day again to follow Friday's calamity.

Well down now for December, things looking fairly bleak. How much more of this can I take? Dont know at the moment, but probably not that much more.

Black Friday

Ouch. The worst day's gambling I can remember for a long time. Pretty much all of November's hard-earned profits gone in one day. Its just misery upon more misery at the moment. Only two winners on the day, and a whole crapton of losers. The great irony of it all is that I very nearly didnt get my bets on today as I had to go to an office lunch so only had about 10 mins to place my bets. Shouldn't have bothered, would have saved myself about six hundred quid.

WTF is going on with the tipsters at the moment?!! I have had a bad week or two but I know some others who subscribe to some different tipsters who have had it even worse. Are we experiencing a freakish run of results or is it just coincidence that the tipsters have all hit trouble at the same time? Any opinions welcome because I am at a loss to explain it.

The theory behind this experiment, and potrfolio investing in general, is that you are spreading risk so not all the selections should do badly at the same time. But I guess in practice it's still gambling and as we all know, it can go horribly wrong at times.

Steve Lewis Hamilton has been simply woeful since I signed up to his service. Barely a winner over the whole period, a big negative ROI and his horses arent even getting close. I am reducing stakes on his selections with immediate effect. A bad day for Tipping Legends, I always worry on these "Specials" they do that they are recommending too many bets and would not tip so many horses if they didnt have this Special aspect to the service. Today was one of their worst days. They had an excellent November though so Im not knocking the service overall, just questionning the quantity of bets on their Specials.

A couple of small glimmers of hope for the weekend: Ogilvy and Appleby are both up there in the Aus PGA and I have a few e/w shouts in the SA golf.

Who was it who said "things can only get better?"...

More misery

Another poor day and the losing run continues. I think a lot of tipsters are having a bad time of it at the moment. I wonder if its the freakish weather, with all the rain it becomes a bit of a lottery. Having said that, why not just tip horses that love heavy going? Thats what Tom Segal does! I guess its worst for the systems, because they dont tend to take account of ground. Perhaps thats why Punter Profits is having such a dismal time (just as I start trialling it, typical!)

Just the one bet today amazingly. A loser from Pricewise Extra. That's what you call a quiet day! I wonder how many times in a season you will have only one bet (excluding Sundays of course).

These dark days of December are pretty depressing. Kind of hoping the betting would cheer me up but on a bit of a downer at the moment. The hazy days of Summer seem a distant dream at the moment. Ah well, enough of that, not long until the xmas break.

Tuesday blues

Not a great day today. Some big bets from HBI which all lost, some big bets from TL which also all lost, (but the first two of which I missed thank goodness!) and a winner for Pricewise Extra's Andrew Barr. He advised it 2 points win but I only backed it 1 point win as that is my standard staking plan for the service. Hell, if Im going to back Tom Segal with only 1 point Im not going to go 2 points on any of the others!

After a good start to the month things have taken a bit of a downer, but plenty of time left to recover.

Roll on wednesday.

Back on the wagon

Well had to get back on the wagon today and carry on with things, with banks somewhat depleted after yesterday's fun and games. I still have enough to sustain a bad run but it still hurts when you lose badly.

Not much to report today, a losing day but not a disaster. I missed Pricewise Extra's tip, which lost anyway.

A Desperate Day

Oh dear. What a disaster Sunday was. Not a good day for the tipsters, but a complete calamity for my own bets. They just kept going wrong! It was one of those days when as soon as I placed a bet, it immediately went pear-shaped. A real shame because its eaten into a chunk of the profits I had built up over the last few weeks. I was hungover and not thinking straight, just betting randomly. Always a recipe for disaster. I will have to make sure I dont do that ever again and will have to plan my trades more strategically and not just bet whimsically.

It was one of those days where I went to bed feeling distraught, that this betting game is just too tough to win at, that I dont have the discipline for it. All the thoughts you get after a disasterous day. Its pretty tough to take sometimes.

The one thing I will say though is that I tend to think about things alot more and work much harder when things go wrong than when I'm winning, when the temptation is to just coast along and think you've figured everything out. So maybe some good will come out of yesterday's travails.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot, to top things off, I missed out on Roger's tip in the Oz Open, Adam Scott, who strolled to a five-shot win.

Super Segal Saves the Day

Tom Segal came to the rescue yesterday with a superb 14-1 winner at Chepstow. Even better was that I fancied the tip myself and had a hefty stake on. Other than that, a pretty poor day with Equine Investments picks both losing and Steve Lewis Hamilton misfiring again. HBI had a nice winner but Tipping Legends made a four point loss on the day and Football Elite's bet lost as well.

Saturday's results only serve to reinforce my feeling that Pricewise Extra's profits are down in the main to Segal and the other tipsters are unconvincing. In time I may end up just backing his tips and not bothering with the others. Will have to see how things go for a while though.

He's back

Well it didnt take long for Equine Investments to hit their stride. A winner today with only their second bet of their all-weather season. Unfortunately their other bet lost, as did Steve Lewis Hamilton's and both of Pricewise Extra's. Tipping Legends' runner grabbed a place and their other bet was a non-runner as the race was abandoned!

It has been a sorry time for Steve Lewis Hamilton lately compared to the rich harvest he has sowed over the last two years. All I can say is that I hope it's only a temporary thing and he finds his form again soon. From what I understand, he has tended over his career to go from amazing winning periods to long losing ones, unlike some other tipsters such as Equine Investments who steadily churn out the profits year after year. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

Working troubles

A difficult day today as I wasnt able to get out at my normal time at lunchtime so missed out on a number of bets. Wasn't too much of a problem this time as they all lost (!), but on another day it could have been costly, if for example Pricewise Extra's tip had won at 8/1 rather than finishing second as it did.

Its a tricky one because at the moment I work a 9-5 day job and obviously the betting has to play second fiddle to it. But if things really took off, maybe I would have to consider changing my work patterns to ensure I didnt miss bets. Anyway, something for the future. As I say, at the moment its just something I'll have to put up with.

Only bets I managed to get on were HBI's who had one short-priced winner.

I suppose its appropriate that advent should start with a winner named New Christmas. It was a good 7/2 pick today by HBI.

November totals

So the first month of the experiment comes to an end. Not a full month, but I will go for calendar months for the purposes of recording results rather than going from mid-month to mid-month.

A winning month, which is the main thing. Not a huge profit, just under nine hundred quid, but a couple of services have shown promise and hopefully the others will pick up as the national hunt and all-weather seasons get into full swing.

A word about profit targets: my aim is to make a minimum of £20,000 over the first 12 months of this experiment. I hear the average London salary is 25 grand, so given that there is no tax on gambling winnings (unless you include Betfair's premium charges!), that would be the equivalent of a London salary. I have already largely covered the costs of the subscriptions, but I guess if we're being honest those should be included in the totals as well.

There are currently nine services in the experiment, so that would be just over two grand profit each on average, which I dont think is overly ambitious. I am looking to add one more service to make it a nice round 10, which would then also mean an average of exactly two grand profit from each service.

There is also my own betting, which centres largely around golf but includes some football trading and occasional tennis bets. I would expect to make at least 10 grand from my own bets, which if the tipsters hit the target set for them, would make up a tidy total.

Anyway, I have no control really over how much the services will make, so having targets is a bit of an abstraction but I feel it is always helpful to have an idea of what you would like to happen when you start something like this.

Looking further into the future, if these services continue to be successful as they have been in the past, there is considerable scope for building banks and increasing stakes. The issue then becomes getting your bets on, which is already a little bit of a concern. However, rather like the football manager who has a full squad to choose from, that will be a nice problem should it arise.

Below are the totals overall and for each service for November:

TOTAL FOR NOVEMBER 2009: £895.50

Tipping Legends: £795.50
Horse Betting Index: -£40
Steve Lewis Hamilton: -£288
Pricewise Extra: -£337
Football Elite: £495
Keith Elliott: £470
Birdie Golf: -£40
Dave Tindall: -160

At month's end

Well November ends on a downer but still in profit overall. Just two bets today, both of which lost.

Its the return of Equine Investments tomorrow, which is good news. However, trying to get a bet on at anything like advised prices will be a challenge to say the least. It will be an interesting test period as to whether it is worth paying the high subscription cost for the service. So far it has been worth it, but this has been an outstanding season for Laurence and I fear a less succesful period would bring that in to question. Anyway, we will see how things go.

Lighting Things Up

Not many bets today but a nice winner for HBI with Key Light at 15/2. I'm glad they had a winner as I recently upped the stakes for that service and every bet since then until today's had lost.

Tom Segal was "thrown a curveball" he says by Fairyhouse being abandoned and he didnt sound particularly confident about the tip he gave out instead at Leicester. Sounds like the Pricewise team are forced by the Racing Post to give out a tip whatever happens, which probably isnt a great policy in fairness.

I missed Steve Lewis Hamilton's pick but it didnt win thank god. There is literally nothing more frustrating for the punter than missing a bet that goes on to win. Leaves you with a few less hairs on your head.

Forza Italia!

Absolutely cock-a-hoot this morning after waking up to the Molinari brothers' win at the World Cup in China. Not only were they a Keith Elliott tip but I backed them heavily myself as well as I felt they were a cracking bet. Eduardo has hit an incredible hot streak and Francesco has been solid all season, just hasn't putted well enough. But in this format his brother would be putting for him some of the time. Perhaps most importantly though, being brothers you would expect them to gel well and spur each other on, a vital part of team golf as anyone who has played it will testify.

A fantastic win of over sixeen hundred clear profit for the tournament. Was unlucky not to have also had a win on Ishikawa, Roger Green's tip for the Casio World Open who finished second. But not far off seven grand profit for the last three weeks on golf, one of my best runs ever. As I have said before, this is good news because it swells the banks for this experiment and gives larger reserves if needed.

Hopefully larger reserves wont be needed though, especially if some more of the tipsters were to hit the kind of form Jeremiah Catskill is in at the moment. An incredible 20/1 winner yesterday on top of all his other recent successes. He has increased the bank considerably and I will be increasing stakes to £30/point accordingly. Tis good to see JC back to his best after a disappointing summer. A pretty good day also for Matt's Football Elite service, which is having a great season so far and also a win for Tom Segal of Pricewise Extra, who seems to be the leader of that service (hence his tips getting smashed in to half their original price).

Will include golf results in sunday's results. Here are Saturday's:

Yes another losing day. its only Tipping Legends doing well at the moment really, all the other services are suffering badly. Steve Lewis Hamilton has been particuarly disappointing since I joined his service.

Football Frenzy

I quiet day for the horse racing tipsters...but its been a monster couple of days for my football trades. Have had nine out of ten successful since I started trading the over/unders and cant believe it really. I think its probably just a lucky run and must tell myself not to get too excited. Was on edge for the second half of a number of tonight's champions league matches. Needed milan and marseille and apol and athletico to stay below 2.5...and thank god they did. It was one of the most nervous halves of football I can remember.

A charming day

A better day today, thanks to a nice couple of winners for Tipping Legends, including Great Charm at 6/1 in the last at Southwell. Jeremiah has been going great guns on the all-weather this season, and merits consideration of a slight increase in stakes after a strong run for the service since I have returned to them.

Pricewise Extra also had a winner, although I backed at SP and therefore missed out on a fair chunk of profit. Disappointing day for HBI, right after I upped the stakes! Ah well, sods law I think they call it.

Also a winning day again for AW Winners, Matt Smith's horse racing service. Although I have not included it in this experiment so far, I am trialling it at the moment and if recent form continues, may add it to the experiment. Has seen a 50% increase in the bank since I returned to the service, and has potential to be as good or even better than Matt's Football Elite service.

A word on the LPGA Tour Championship last night - I was right about Ochoa, she again failed to convert a great position, and almost unthinkably for a player who was won 28 tournaments in 4 years, she seems to find winning hard these days. I was wrong about Shin though, she disappointed. Still, only made a slight loss on the tournament so not to worry too much. In hindsight, a lay of Ochoa should have been the bet given how low she traded at times.

Another disappointing day

The point of the portfolio approach, as I understand it, is that the ups and downs are meant to cancel each other out leaving you with a nice, steady, even profit. Well that hasnt happened so far and today was another example of everything failing at once.

Two losers apiece from Pricewise Extra and Steve Lewis Hamilton and one from Tipping Legends means its been another expensive day. As ever, I have to tell myself to be patient and wait for things to come good. Its tough though when you have so many losers at once. To be honest, if it wasnt for my own betting, I would probably have to be cutting stakes already. A sobering thought so early in to the experiment.

Im on Jiyai Shin for the LPGA today, feel she is much more clinical at the moment than some of the others at the top of the leaderboard and has added incentive to capture all the honours today. Ochoa looks a shadow of her former self and I would be suprised if she wins tonight.

A word on Horse Betting Index: I am considering upping the stakes slightly to £25/point after recent successes. Its now looking like nine winning months out of nine and over 400 points profit for the season for them. Although the ROI isnt as high as Equine Investments or SLH this year, its still mightily impressive. That kind of consistency is exactly what you're looking for as an investor, and would have allowed a considerable building of the bank over the year. Ive only been with them a short while but I can see potential and I want to put my money where my mouth is by looking to grow the bank as profits build.

Morning glory

What a morning! Tried to keep waking up to check Molinari's position during the night but gave up after about 3am. Awoke around 9 to see he had won in a playoff against Karlsson. A great result, followed by Westwood's emphatic triumph in Dubai means a cracking weekend's golf for me and a superb end to the season. Won over two and a half grand this weekend following thirteen hundred last week on Ames, meaning Ive won nearly four grand on golf over the last two weeks. That's just what I need to maintain my banks for this experiment and in general to keep myself going.

As for the experiment itself, more disappointment from the horse racing and golf tipsters today. Its difficult not to get a little frustrated during these losing runs. You pay a lot for the services and expect them to deliver results. I guess you have to stick with it and stay disciplined and hope they deliver long-term results.

Westwood Ho!

Things were looking like they were going to be set for a thrilling finish to the Race to Dubai tomorrow, with the top two contenders, McIlroy and Westwood, shooting it out for the title and the order of merit. Then McIlroy went and bogied the last three holes, all but handing it to Westwood. Things not quite over yet, but Rory will need some fireworks tomorrow and he has to hope Lee messes up. I guess its all part of the learning curve for the young lad, he just showed a lack of maturity I felt.

I am on both heavily so a Westwood win would be a good result. McGowan looks like the only realistic threat, although I suppose you cant right off the guys further back.

I am also on Eduardo Molinari in the Dunlop Phoenix at 40/1 and he leads by one going in to the final round. Karlsson one behind is a worry. Forza Molinari!

A mixed day on the experiment front. Losers from TL, SLH and Pricewise Extra, but a late winner from HBI and a profitable day for Football Elite, largely thanks to a late winner for Depor.

Swings and roundabouts

Well on Friday I wasnt able to place any bets as I had meetings all day. But this time missing bets actually saved me a fair bit of cash. Bets from HBI, Tipping Legends and Pricewise Extra all lost.

There was nothing from SLH.The bets that I would have placed had I been able to were:

Tipping Legends:

Royal Wedding 2pts win @ 7/2 - LOST
Hopkins 1pt e/w @ 11/1 - LOST
Sunsetten 2pts win @ 15/2 - LOST

Not much to report

A quiet day today on the betting front. Pricewise Extra's unlucky run continues with another close second. Tipping Legends' tip pulled up, and nothing today from Steve Lewis Hamilton or HBI.

Arghhh!

That is the only word I can think of to describe how am I feeling after having missed another winner from HBI today. It cost me 300 quid, which means in a week I have missed out on pretty much a grand that I would have won had I backed all their tips. Today's wasnt really my fault as the race had already been run before I could get out during my lunchbreak. I will have to consider reworking my day so I dont miss any more tips.

Other than that, a slightly disappointing day anyway.

The price of fame

About 8/1, that's if you're talking about Elusive Fame, tipped up the Tipping Legends and squeezing home by a neck in the 2.50 at Southwell. Added to a winner at 4/1 in the 3.20 at Southwell, that completes a fine run of recent form on the all-weather for TL. With Steve Lewis Hamilton also tipping a winner, turned out to be a fine day.

Could have been an absolute cracker though, had Pricewise Extra's tip come home rather than finishing second.

I forgot to include the Birdie Golf Service's tips in my weekend's results so will include here instead. As this is a cumulative experiment it wont make any difference to the totals putting them in now rather than yesterday. Just to note, they tipped up Adam Scott for the Oz Masters but I didnt manage to get the bet on in time so it wont form part of my results.

He Ames he scores!

Was over the moon last night with Ames' win at Disney. Backed him at 40/1 going into the final round and then at 11s in-running. I have a poor record in playoffs so perhaps I was owed one. The other two really handed it to him though, Ames definitely had luck on his side.

Even taking into account a load of other bets, I managed to emerge with a 13 hundred quid profit from the tournament. Shame the US tour is over really, 2009 was a superb year for me. Hopefully 2010 will bring similar results.

Quiet day on the racing front, apparently one of Tipping Legends' tips ran a very close second.

I will include the weekend's golf results in today's P/L, even though they were yesterday's technically.

Lucky at Last!

Loathe as I am to use the name of a horse as the title of a blog entry, I feel it sums things up very nicely. Three winners today, and hopefully back on track.

Tipping Legends landed a 14/1 winner at Cheltenham, although only staking 0.75pts e/w. Tom Segal landed a nice winner for Pricewise Extra, although the price had halved by the time I got on. And HBI rounded off the day with a solid 7-2 winner.

Just a note to say, rather appropriately for how things have been going, I missed a 9-1 winner for HBI yesterday, as it was sent out early in the week for the Paddy Power Gold Cup and I forgot to put it on! Damnation is all I can say and that I will make sure it doesnt happen again.

Im now going to settle in for the final round of the US golf. Have a few runners but Ames would be the best result for me. A nice early finish tonight so should get to bed at a more reasonable hour than normal on a Sunday.

Finally a winner! Or was it?!!

There I was breathing a sigh of relief as finally I land a winner with Tipping Legends' last tip of the day, Wicked Daze in the 8.50 at Wolves. Then, almost unbelievably, I find out its been disqualified. Went to bed last night thoroughly disgruntled with this experiment only three days in, having not had a winner and having backed about 25 losers.

But alas, I awake this morning to find out that the bookie I placed it with has paid out! Hurrah, finally a winner! This is one instance where it pays to bet with the bookie rather than Betfair.

I also awake to find Tiger has earned his ridiculous appearance money by dotting up by a couple down under. Not a big win as I backed him at odds-on but any profit is gratefully received at the moment. In Hong Kong, McIlroy just misses out on landing a big pay day for Keith Elliott (and me, having backed his tips).

I now have serious doubts about this kid McIlroy's ability to win and his putting concerns me greatly. I simply cannot believe he is still value to win, but I suppose may be ok to back for a place.

Am I a jinx?

Here is the evidence:

I join Tipping Legends after they've amassed 400 points profit in 2008 and before that have been the top tipsters on a tipping site for the previous two years. I join, and they proceed to lose about 40 points over a few months. I leave, thinking there are cheaper services that will bring better returns. They then produce 140 points profit over the next two months.

I return to the service, and they have a complete shocker, a whole day without anything.

I know its too early to judge but it seems uncanny how often I join a long-term winning service only for it to hit a terrible losing streak.

Close to a big winner for Pricewise Extra, but alas no cigar. All in all a shocking day.

On the positive side, Tiger has moved three clear down under and Liang is in prime position in Hong Kong. Justin Rose, one of Keith Elliott's tips, is also well-placed in the US. I have backed him again with a view to laying heavily when his price drops lower.

I also think I may have devised a trading strategy for football that will return around 8% roi in the long-term. Its based around the fact that around 40-50% of games are drawing at half-time and the majority of the remainder are 1-0 to either side (i.e. there are few goals in the first half). You still need to pick the right matches but the market will help with that. I am optimistic but will test over the next few weeks and report back.

Figures for 12.11.09

Well here are the figures for 12.11.09, the first day of this experiment.

Just a note to say I will be betting £20/point on Tipping Legends. They recommend a 200 point bank but I think tipsters often give very conservative advice for bank levels because they dont want punters coming back to them moaning if they have a losing streak and blow the advised bank. I think 100 should be reasonable.

I will be betting £50 a point for Pricewise Extra, £75/point Equine Investments after a great Summer, and £20/point HBI.

Results for 12.11.09:

Tipping Legends

3.50 Southwell - Loose Caboose - 1pt e/w 7-1 (LOST) -£40

4.20 Wolverhampton - Jewelled - 1pt win 11.33 (LOST) £-50

TOTAL FOR DAY: -£90

Quiet Start

Well a quiet start to proceedings today. Nothing from SLH and Horse Betting Index and Equine Investments are on holiday until December.

Tipping Legends had a loser today, as did Pricewise Extra.

I should have mentioned that I also follow Dave Tindall of Bettingzone fame and will include his results in this experiment. Been a bit quiet of late but Dave is one of the best out there.

Golf bets this week have made a promising start in Hong Kong - McIlroy, Molinari and Liang all up there early doors. Not sure what happened to Scott Strange though.

Tiger looks a nailed-on certainty to win down under after hitting the lead already and Ive had an interest. His record from infront speaks for itself and against this field he could win left-handed.

Had a few tennis trades today - generally badly. I did come across an interesting statistic though: apparently 40% of break points are won by the receiver. Seems incredible to me, I would have guessed more like 20%. But it gives options for trading I think.

A Betting Experiment

I am starting an experiment today. I will be following a number of well-known tipsters, using a "portfolio" approach to betting, to see if you can make a living, or at least supplement your income with a healthy second stream, by following the advices of well-known tipsters.

I will be using five front-line horse racing services, a couple of golf ones and one football service. I will be open to adding other services as time goes on but for the moment will be trying to stick to these services and see how we do. The idea will be to use advised betting banks and to increase staking as (hopefully) the banks increase.

The five front-line horse-racing services are: Equine Investments, Steve Lewis Hamilton (Private), Tipping Legends, Pricewise Extra and Horse Betting Index. The golf services will be Keith Elliott and Tipping Legends' Birdie Golf Service and the football service will be Football Elite.

I will also have my own bets and will keep records of those but will not include them in this experiment, as it is really about how well tipsters do in the long run.

I hope this proves fruitful, my only worries are of a losing run at the start which would stretch my funds, but fingers crossed they dont all start badly, and I can get some cash in reserve.

Right, just 35 mins to Pricewise Extra's tips, lets get going!
